Séquestré avec les cardinaux du monde entier dans la résidence Sainte-Marthe et la chapelle Sixtine, Lawrence observe les ambitions et les calculs des principaux prétendants, dont le libéral Bellini, le conservateur Tedesco et le Canadien Tremblay, considéré comme favori. Au fil des votes successifs, aucun candidat ne parvient à réunir la majorité requise, tandis que des révélations sur le passé de certains cardinaux viennent bouleverser les alliances. Conclave adapte le roman de Robert Harris publié en 2016, dont l’idée est née en 2013 en regardant à la télévision l’élection du pape François. L’écriture du scénario est confiée à Peter Straughan, déjà auteur des adaptations de La Taupe et du Chardonneret, et sensible au sujet du fait de son éducation catholique. Le projet est officialisé en mai 2022, avec Edward Berger à la réalisation et un casting réunissant notamment Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow et Isabella Rossellini ; le reste de la distribution est dévoilé en janvier 2023, au moment où débute le tournage à Rome. N’ayant pas accès au Vatican, l’équipe reconstitue la chapelle Sixtine et la résidence Sainte-Marthe dans les studios de Cinecittà. La musique est composée par Volker Bertelmann, déjà récompensé d’un Oscar pour À l’ouest, rien de nouveau, précédent film de Berger ; il privilégie une approche sonore originale, notamment via le Cristal Baschet, plutôt que des tonalités ecclésiastiques classiques. Le film est présenté en avant-première aux festivals de Telluride et de Toronto en août et septembre 2024.

En France, Allociné recense une note presse moyenne de 3,5/5 et une note spectateurs de 3,9/5. Conclave is adapted from Robert Harris's 2016 novel, whose premise originated in 2013 after he watched television coverage of the conclave that elected Pope Francis.
