Le Manufacturier is Mattias Köping's second novel, published on October 25, 2018 by éditions Ring, two years after Les Démoniaques. A 548-page noir novel spanning Normandy, Le Havre, and the Balkans of the 1990s, it weaves three distinct narrative threads that progressively converge toward a single point of rupture. Formally more ambitious than his debut, it confirms and amplifies Köping's reputation as one of the most uncompromising voices in contemporary French thriller writing, through the density of its architecture, the documented violence of its subject matter, and the clinical precision of its prose.

The novel opens on November 19, 1991 in Erdut, Croatia: a handful of Serbian paramilitaries, the Lions of Serbia, massacre a family. A young boy survives, left for dead. A quarter of a century later, lawyer Irena Ilić attempts to trace the trail back to the head of the commando, the sinister Dragoljub, in order to bring him before international justice. In parallel, in a troubled housing estate on the outskirts of Le Havre, Lieutenant Zéro — a cop with brutal methods and absolute convictions — investigates overlapping organised crime and trafficking operations. A third narrative thread runs as an undercurrent: that of the Manufacturier himself, a serial killer who films and tortures his victims in order to sell his work on the darknet. These three arcs, initially appearing independent, are welded into an explosive structure whose successive revelations operate as detonations.

Köping has spoken in interviews of a highly artisanal approach to writing, close in its relationship to raw material to that of Stephen King — meticulous research, patient construction, refusal of the gratuitous twist in favour of tension built through the accumulation of detail. The Balkan dimension of the novel required extensive research into the Serbian-Croatian conflict, a period the author presents as largely unknown to the French general public despite its geographical proximity and the gravity of the atrocities committed. The figure of the Manufacturier — a killer who monetises his crimes on the darknet — anchors the novel in a reflection on the mediatisation of violence and the economy of horror in the digital age, a theme distinct from that of Les Démoniaques and evidence of a deliberate intent to expand his thematic range from book to book. Éditions Ring, whose editorial policy explicitly champions noir fiction in direct dialogue with contemporary social dysfunction, provides a coherent publishing context for this project.

Praised by critics as the most remarkable novel of 2018 in French crime fiction, Le Manufacturier significantly surpassed the reception of the debut and consolidated Köping's standing as a major figure in the genre. Readers and specialist reviewers consistently highlighted the mastery of its construction — avoiding the trap of cheap reversals in favour of visceral, earned tension — and the documentary accuracy of its treatment of the Yugoslav conflict, which lends the novel a near-historical dimension. The book generated substantial word-of-mouth in the literary blogging community and enjoyed lasting presence in bookshops. Köping has since published further titles, including the Cartel 1011 series with Flammarion, but Le Manufacturier, alongside Les Démoniaques, remains the text that most decisively established his literary territory: uncompromising darkness, served by rigorous narrative architecture and prose stripped to the bone.
