Yellowjackets a été imaginée par Ashley Lyle et Bart Nickerson, également connus pour leur travail sur Narcos et Dispatches from Elsewhere, en s’inspirant notamment de la catastrophe aérienne des Andes et de l’histoire du groupe de pionniers Donner Party. Le projet, vendu à Showtime en 2018, a été commandé en pilote en 2019 avant sa mise en série fin 2020, avec Jonathan Lisco rejoignant Lyle et Nickerson comme coshowrunner.
