Banksy is an anonymous British street artist, active since the 1990s, whose identity has never been officially confirmed by the artist himself. Emerging from Bristol’s underground scene, Banksy has become one of the most influential figures in contemporary urban art through satirical stencils that combine dark humor with political and social critique, spread across walls worldwide.
Banksy’s identity officially remains a mystery: the artist has never publicly confirmed who he is. He emerged in the late 1990s from the Bristol graffiti scene, alongside artists such as 3D, Nick Walker and Inkie, before moving to London around 1999-2000. He began with freehand graffiti before turning to stencils, a faster technique that allowed him to protect his anonymity. His first documented large-scale mural, The Mild Mild West, was painted in 1997 in Bristol. In March 2026, an in-depth Reuters investigation, based on court records, travel documents and witness accounts, identified the artist as Robin Gunningham, born in Bristol in 1973 or 1974 and later using the name David Jones; the report described musician Robert Del Naja, of the band Massive Attack, as a possible regular collaborator. This identification, however, remains officially unconfirmed by the artist himself.
Banksy favors stencils, which he executes quickly on walls to reduce the risk of arrest, working in a palette dominated by black and white with occasional isolated color accents, often red. His images, simple and immediately readable, combine irony, appropriation of familiar imagery and social or political critique addressing militarism, surveillance, consumerism and migration. He frequently plays on the context of the chosen site, integrating the wall, the street or urban furniture into the composition. Beyond wall stencils, he has developed physical installations, repurposed objects and large-scale participatory projects, such as the Dismaland theme park and the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem.
Among his best-known works are Girl with Balloon, which appeared in London in 2002 and became, after partially self-destructing at auction in 2018, Love Is in the Bin, as well as Flower Thrower, depicting a protester hurling a bouquet of flowers. In 2005, he painted a series of stencils on the barrier separating Israel from the Palestinian territories. In 2015, Banksy opened Dismaland, a dystopian theme park in Weston-super-Mare featuring artists such as Damien Hirst and Jenny Holzer, followed in 2017 by the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem, built against the separation wall. That same year, he created a Brexit-themed mural in Dover. In 2022, several stencils in war-affected areas of Ukraine were attributed to him. His documentary film Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) received an Oscar nomination. His works, regularly sold at auction for millions of dollars, continue to be authenticated through his organization Pest Control.
