Maxime Chattam, de son vrai nom Maxime Drouot, est un écrivain français né le 19 février 1976 à Herblay, dans le Val-d’Oise. Auteur spécialisé dans le roman policier et le thriller, souvent teinté de fantastique, il s’est imposé depuis le début des années 2000 comme l’un des maîtres du genre en France, avec pour œuvre fondatrice La Trilogie du Mal et pour thème récurrent l’exploration du mal sous ses formes psychologiques et criminelles.
Durant son enfance, Maxime Chattam effectue de fréquents séjours aux États-Unis, notamment à Portland, en Oregon, ville qui deviendra le cadre de son premier grand roman. Scolarisé au lycée Montesquieu à Herblay puis à l’Université Paris XIII-Nord, il envisage d’abord une carrière d’acteur et suit des cours au Cours Simon à Paris, décrochant quelques rôles à la télévision et dans la publicité. Il abandonne progressivement cette voie pour se consacrer à l’écriture, qu’il nourrit d’un passage dans la jungle thaïlandaise en 1988 puis d’une formation en criminologie à l’université Paris VIII Saint-Denis. Employé à la Fnac au rayon livres policiers à partir de 1999, il y noue des contacts avec le monde de l’édition, ce qui lui permet de proposer son manuscrit à l’éditeur Michel Lafon. Il publie L’Âme du mal en 2002, premier volet de La Trilogie du Mal, puis Le Cinquième Règne en 2003, initialement sous le pseudonyme Maxime Williams.
L’œuvre de Chattam se caractérise par une écriture documentée, nourrie de sa formation en psychologie criminelle, en police technique et scientifique et en médecine légale, qu’il mêle à des intrigues à forte tension narrative. Son style allie une précision quasi clinique dans la description des enquêtes à des irruptions ponctuelles de fantastique ou d’horreur. Il revendique l’influence de Stephen King, découvert notamment à travers le film Stand by Me, ce qui lui vaut d’être régulièrement présenté par la presse et les lecteurs comme le « Stephen King français ».
Parmi ses œuvres majeures figurent L’Âme du mal (2002, Michel Lafon), qui introduit le personnage de l’inspecteur Joshua Brolin et lance La Trilogie du Mal ; Le Cinquième Règne (2003), récompensé par le prix du roman fantastique du festival de Gérardmer ; la saga Autre-Monde (2008-2016), série de science-fiction en sept tomes destinée à un large public ; ainsi que des thrillers plus récents comme Le Signal (2019) ou Un(e)secte (2021). L’Âme du mal lui vaut également le Grand Prix Sang d’Encre en 2002, et il reçoit le prix Babelio Polar et thriller en 2023. Selon son éditeur Albin Michel, il a vendu plus de sept millions d’exemplaires en France depuis 2001, avec des traductions dans une quinzaine de langues. Son roman Le Signal fait l’objet d’une adaptation à l’écran. Maxime Chattam demeure aujourd’hui l’un des auteurs de thriller les plus lus en France, régulièrement présent en tête des classements de meilleures ventes.
