Produit par Marv Films et acquis par Apple TV+ pour une diffusion mondiale sur sa plateforme, il rassemble un casting étoilé : Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena, Dua Lipa et Ariana DeBose. Lancée malgré elle dans une course-poursuite internationale avec son chat Alfie dans son sac à dos, Elly découvre progressivement que ses livres ne sont pas le fruit de son imagination mais l’écho de ses propres souvenirs enfouis : elle serait elle-même une ancienne espionne, et son vrai nom serait Rachel Kylle, anagramme du titre de ses romans.
Le projet naît pendant le confinement de 2020 lorsque Matthew Vaughn tombe sur un manuscrit attribué à une certaine Elly Conway. Il confie l’adaptation à Jason Fuchs, choisissant d’imbriquer le monde du roman dans celui du film. Les véritables auteurs du texte — Terry Hayes et Tammy Cohen — révèlent leur identité en février 2024, le roman sortant en librairie le 9 janvier simultanément à la promotion du film. Une théorie persistante sur les réseaux attribue le pseudonyme à Taylor Swift ; Vaughn la dément tout en admettant s’être inspiré d’un documentaire sur la chanteuse pour l’idée du sac à dos-chattière. À sa sortie, Argylle constitue le premier grand échec commercial de 2024. Son premier week-end américain n’engrange que 18 millions de dollars, et le film ne récolte que 35 millions à l’international pour son ouverture, loin des attentes pour un budget estimé entre 100 et 150 millions par Vaughn lui-même. En France, il n’atteint que 187 000 entrées lors de son premier week-end. L’accueil critique est négatif avec 34 % sur Rotten Tomatoes à partir de 198 critiques.
