Le projet circule à Hollywood depuis plus d’une décennie. Universal en détient d’abord les droits, puis Sony annonce en 2014 une adaptation avec Amy Schumer dans le rôle titre ; l’actrice se retire en 2017. Warner Bros. reprend le projet et s’associe à Mattel, confiant finalement la réalisation à Greta Gerwig en 2019, après le succès de Lady Bird et Little Women. Gerwig coécrit le scénario avec Noah Baumbach. Le tournage débute le 22 mars 2022 aux studios Warner Bros. Leavesden en Angleterre et s’achève le 21 juillet, avec quelques scènes au skatepark de Venice Beach à Los Angeles. La photographie est signée Rodrigo Prieto. Le budget initial de 100 millions de dollars grimpe à 145 millions. La bande originale est supervisée par Mark Ronson ; Billie Eilish compose et interprète What Was I Made For?.
