Brightburn : L’Enfant du mal, sorti en France sous le titre Brightburn, est un film américain de science-fiction horrifique réalisé par David Yarovesky, sorti en salles aux États-Unis le 24 mai 2019 et en France le 26 juin de la même année. Écrit par Brian et Mark Gunn et produit par James Gunn, le film propose un détournement horrifique du mythe des origines de Superman, imaginant ce qu’il adviendrait si un enfant venu d’ailleurs, doté de pouvoirs surhumains, choisissait de s’en servir pour semer la terreur plutôt que pour protéger l’humanité. En 2006, dans la petite ville de Brightburn, au Kansas, Tori et Kyle Breyer, un couple de fermiers en proie à l’infertilité, découvrent un bébé au sein d’une capsule spatiale accidentellement écrasée sur leurs terres. Persuadés qu’il s’agit d’un signe du destin, ils recueillent l’enfant, qu’ils prénomment Brandon, et l’élèvent en secret, dissimulant la capsule sous leur grange. À l’approche de ses douze ans, Brandon, jusqu’alors un garçon calme et curieux, commence à manifester des pouvoirs extraordinaires ainsi qu’un comportement de plus en plus inquiétant et incontrôlable, poussant peu à peu ses proches à comprendre qu’il pourrait représenter un danger bien plus grand qu’un simple adolescent difficile. Alors que ses actes prennent une tournure de plus en plus violente, Tori se retrouve confrontée à un dilemme déchirant entre son amour maternel et la nécessité d’affronter la véritable nature de son fils.
Le projet naît en décembre 2017 sous le titre de travail « Untitled James Gunn Horror Project », porté par le producteur James Gunn, qui confie l’écriture du scénario à son frère Brian et à son cousin Mark, chargés de transposer les codes de l’origine de Superman dans un registre explicitement horrifique. La réalisation est confiée à David Yarovesky, déjà collaborateur de James Gunn sur divers projets vidéo. Le tournage se déroule de mars à mai 2018 pour un budget particulièrement resserré, estimé entre 6 et 7 millions de dollars. La photographie est signée Michael Dallatorre, le montage assuré par Andrew S. Eisen et Peter Gvozdas, et la musique composée par Tim Williams. Le film est produit par The H Collective et Troll Court Entertainment, et distribué par Sony Pictures via ses filiales Screen Gems et Stage 6 Films.
Accueilli par des critiques partagées, saluant l’originalité de son postulat et certaines séquences horrifiques marquantes tout en regrettant un scénario jugé trop schématique pour exploiter pleinement son potentiel, Brightburn connaît néanmoins un net succès commercial au regard de son faible budget, totalisant environ 33,2 millions de dollars de recettes mondiales, soit près de cinq fois son coût de production. As his actions grow more violent, Tori finds herself caught in an agonizing dilemma between her maternal love and the need to confront her son’s true nature.
The project originated in December 2017 under the working title « Untitled James Gunn Horror Project, » driven by producer James Gunn, who entrusted the screenplay to his brother Brian and cousin Mark, tasked with transposing the conventions of Superman’s origin story into an explicitly horror register. Direction was handed to David Yarovesky, a longtime collaborator of James Gunn on various video projects.
