Le consentement (Consent) is a French-Belgian biographical drama directed by Vanessa Filho, released in France on October 11, 2023. Produced by Carole Lambert and Marc Missonnier for Moana Films and Windy Production, in co-production with France 2 Cinéma, and distributed by Pan Distribution, this 119-minute film was co-written by Vanessa Filho, François Pirot, and Vanessa Springora herself, based on Springora's autobiographical account published in January 2020 by Éditions Grasset. It stars Kim Higelin, Jean-Paul Rouve, Laetitia Casta, and Élodie Bouchez. Vanessa Filho's second feature after Gueule d'ange (2018), Le consentement adapts a text whose publication had sent shockwaves through France, contributing to a shift in legislation on the age of sexual consent. Le consentement received two César nominations in 2024.
Paris, November 1985. Vanessa (Kim Higelin) is thirteen when her mother (Laetitia Casta), an editor, brings her to a dinner attended by Gabriel Matzneff (Jean-Paul Rouve), a celebrated fifty-year-old writer well known in Parisian literary and political circles — and already notorious for his "paedophile" leanings and sexual tourism in Southeast Asia. The man's intellectual charisma captivates the literature-loving teenager. Matzneff waits for her outside school, sends her letters, overwhelms her with praise. The relationship establishes itself, tolerated by a mother incapable of protecting her daughter and ignored by a cultural milieu complicit in the abuse. Vanessa becomes the lover, muse, and literary material of a predator who publishes the intimate details of their relationship, subjecting her to public humiliation. Le consentement traces Matzneff's sexual, psychological, and artistic hold over Vanessa, then her long road to reconstruction, culminating in her ultimate act: publishing her own book as an adult to turn the weapon of literature back against him.
Marc Missonnier read Springora's book upon its January 2020 release and immediately called Vanessa Filho, sensing an affinity between the filmmaker and the material. Filho describes having "had images in her head" from the first reading and accepting without hesitation. Springora co-wrote the screenplay for Le consentement with Filho and Belgian screenwriter François Pirot — her participation in the writing representing, by her own account, a further form of revenge against her abuser. The casting rests on two major against-type choices: Jean-Paul Rouve, known for comic roles, accepted the role of Matzneff in a performance running entirely counter to his screen image, admitting he struggled to "go home in the evenings" after each day of filming; Laetitia Casta plays the absent and complicit mother, also an unusual register for her. Kim Higelin carries the film across its full length. Élodie Bouchez appears as the adult Vanessa Springora in 2013. The reconstruction of 1980s Paris includes notably the Apostrophes sequence — Bernard Pivot's literary television programme — in which Quebec journalist Denise Bombardier had been the only public figure to confront Matzneff directly about his practices, in 1990.
Critical reception was divided. Favorable coverage — France Info, LCI, Fnac L'éclaireur — praised the film's rigour in dissecting the mechanics of predatory control and Rouve's unrecognizable, terrifying performance. Reservations came from Les Inrockuptibles (formal incoherence, unresolved aesthetic difficulty) and Libération, which found the film "littered with excesses and painful archetypes, stripped of the original text's finesse." The commercial trajectory was without precedent for this type of subject: after a modest opening, Le consentement surged by +73% in its third week, propelled by massive word-of-mouth on TikTok — videos linked to the film accumulated 26.2 million views on the platform. It crossed 300,000 admissions in its fourth week and 500,000 in its fifth, eventually totaling over 600,000 entries. Le consentement was screened at the National Assembly at the initiative of the Secretary of State for Children, Charlotte Caubel. It received César nominations in 2024 for Best Adaptation and Best Female Revelation (Kim Higelin), and Higelin won Best Actress at the Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn 2023.
