Raw (titre original français : Grave) est un film franco-belgo-italien de 2016 réalisé par Julia Ducournau, avec Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf et Rabah Naït Oufella. Présenté à la Semaine de la Critique du Festival de Cannes en mai 2016, ce premier long-métrage de la réalisatrice s’inscrit dans le genre du body horror et du récit initiatique. L’histoire suit une jeune vétérinaire végétarienne confrontée à un bizutage qui bouleverse ses certitudes. Entre drame social et horreur, Raw explore les thèmes de la transformation, de l’appétit et de la filiation.
Dans une famille de vétérinaires strictement végétariens, Justine, seize ans, intègre la même grande école vétérinaire que sa sœur aînée Alexia, où leurs parents se sont eux-mêmes rencontrés. Dès son arrivée, elle est confrontée à un bizutage violent imposé aux premières années, qui la contraint à manger de la viande crue pour la première fois de sa vie. Cette transgression déclenche chez elle des bouleversements physiques et psychologiques inattendus, tandis qu’elle noue une relation ambiguë avec son colocataire Adrien. Raw mêle drame social, horreur corporelle et comédie noire pour raconter un passage à l’âge adulte hors norme, sans dévoiler son issue.
Le tournage s’est déroulé sur le campus du Sart Tilman de l’Université de Liège, en Belgique, un choix motivé par Julia Ducournau en raison de son architecture évoquant les campus américains, rare en France. Le projet, porté par les sociétés Petit Film, Rouge International et Frakas Productions, disposait d’un budget d’environ 3,5 millions d’euros. Julia Ducournau avait auparavant réalisé le téléfilm Mange (2012) et le court-métrage Junior, déjà centrés sur la métamorphose physique. Pour les rôles principaux, elle a choisi Garance Marillier, actrice fétiche déjà présente dans Junior, et Ella Rumpf, repérée dans le film suisse-allemand Chrieg (2014). Le film a été présenté en compétition à la Semaine de la Critique du Festival de Cannes 2016, avant une tournée dans de nombreux festivals internationaux (Toronto, Sundance, Sitges, Gérardmer).
Raw a reçu un accueil critique très favorable, avec 93% d’avis positifs sur Rotten Tomatoes et 81/100 sur Metacritic. Sorti en salles en France le 15 mars 2017 par Wild Bunch Distribution, le film a réalisé 149 239 entrées, un résultat jugé solide pour un film de genre français interdit aux moins de seize ans. Il a été récompensé dans plusieurs festivals, notamment le Grand Prix et le Prix de la critique à Gérardmer, ainsi qu’un prix au Festival international du film fantastique de Paris. Le film a également obtenu six nominations aux César 2018, dont meilleur réalisateur, meilleur premier film et meilleur espoir féminin pour Garance Marillier. Sa projection au Festival de Toronto avait par ailleurs été marquée par plusieurs malaises de spectateurs, largement relayés dans la presse.
