Ready or Not (sorti en France sous le titre Wedding Nightmare) est une comédie horrifique américaine réalisée par Matt Bettinelli-Olpin et Tyler Gillett, membres du collectif Radio Silence. Distribué par Fox Searchlight Pictures aux États-Unis le 21 août 2019 et le 28 août en France, ce long métrage de 95 minutes est écrit par Guy Busick et R. Christopher Murphy. Dans un manoir cossu hanté par une malédiction dynastique, le film croise survival horror et satire sociale pour ausculter avec jubilation les pathologies des familles aisées, le poids des traditions et le prix du mariage dans une aristocratie corrompue jusqu’à l’os.
Le soir de son mariage avec Alex Le Domas (Mark O’Brien), Grace (Samara Weaving) est invitée à participer à une tradition familiale immémoriale : tirer une carte indiquant le jeu auquel le nouvel entrant dans la famille devra se soumettre. Elle tire la carte du cache-cache — la seule qui condamne le joueur à mort, en vertu d’un pacte avec le diable passé par l’ancêtre fondateur de la dynasty Le Domas. Dès minuit, armés d’arbalètes, de fusils et de lames, les membres de la famille se lancent à sa poursuite à travers les dédales du manoir. Grace, en robe de mariée et progressivement ensanglantée, va devoir survivre jusqu’à l’aube. Le film joue de l’escalade absurde — les chasseurs s’avèrent tour à tour incompétents, lâches ou déchirés par le doute — et déroule une satire mordante du privilege de classe sous couvert d’un jeu à mort digne des pires reality shows.
Le projet naît en novembre 2017, lorsque Bettinelli-Olpin et Gillett sont engagés par Mythology Entertainment et Vinson Films pour mettre en scène le scénario de Busick et Murphy. Les deux cinéastes, issus du collectif Radio Silence connu pour ses contributions à V/H/S (2012) et Southbound (2015), voient dans ce film l’occasion d’un premier long métrage de genre en solo à budget maîtrisé. Le casting s’effectue entre août et octobre 2018 : Samara Weaving, nièce de Hugo Weaving et déjà remarquée dans The Babysitter (2017), décroche le rôle principal, entourée d’Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, Andie MacDowell et Nicky Guadagni dans des rôles de belle-famille. Le tournage principal se déroule du 15 octobre au 19 novembre 2018, soit en seulement 26 jours, entièrement dans la région de Toronto — notamment au château Casa Loma, au Sunnybrook Park, à la réserve naturelle de Claireville et au Parkwood Estate à Oshawa. La photographie est assurée par Brett Jutkiewicz, le montage par Terel Gibson et la partition par Brian Tyler, qui signe sa première collaboration avec le duo.
Présenté en avant-première mondiale au Festival Fantasia de Montréal le 27 juillet 2019, Ready or Not obtient un score de 88 % sur Rotten Tomatoes, dont le consensus le qualifie d’« intelligent, subversif, drôle et sombre ». Sur Metacritic, il récolte 64/100. Plusieurs critiques établissent des parallèles avec Get Out de Jordan Peele pour sa capacité à articuler divertissement de genre et commentaire social. Sur le plan commercial, le film réalise l’une des performances les plus remarquables du cinéma d’horreur de l’année, engrangeant 57,6 millions de dollars au box-office mondial pour un budget de seulement 6 millions. La performance de Samara Weaving, tour à tour terrifiée, déterminée et irrésistiblement drôle, est unanimement citée comme le moteur du film : elle remporte le prix de la meilleure actrice aux Fright Meter Awards, et le film est nommé au Saturn Award du meilleur film d’horreur en 2021. Le succès du film propulse Bettinelli-Olpin et Gillett à la tête de la franchise Scream (2022, 2023), avant qu’ils ne reviennent au matériau original avec Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, sorti le 20 mars 2026.

The project originated in November 2017 when Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett — known through Radio Silence for their contributions to V/H/S (2012) and Southbound (2015) — were hired by Mythology Entertainment and Vinson Films to direct Busick and Murphy’s screenplay. The two filmmakers saw in the project an opportunity to make their first standalone genre feature on a tight budget.
