Dans la Nouvelle-Orléans d’aujourd’hui, R. M. Renfield sert le comte Dracula depuis près d’un siècle. Épuisé par cette relation abusive, Renfield rejoint un groupe de parole destiné aux personnes emprisonnées dans des dynamiques toxiques, où il trouve un écho troublant à sa propre situation. Sa rencontre avec Rebecca Quincy, policière déterminée à abattre le clan criminel des Lobos, lui ouvre une perspective d’affranchissement. Mais Dracula, affaibli et tapi dans les sous-sols d’un immeuble délabré, n’entend pas laisser son serviteur s’échapper aussi facilement. Entre le vampire manipulateur et la pègre locale, Renfield va devoir choisir entre la servitude éternelle et une vie enfin à lui.
L’idée originale est née de Robert Kirkman, co-créateur de la bande dessinée The Walking Dead, qui souhaitait raconter le mythe de Dracula du point de vue de son sbire le plus dévoué. Le scénario a été confié à Ryan Ridley, connu pour son travail sur Rick and Morty et Invincible. Initialement, le projet devait s’inscrire dans un univers partagé de monstres Universal, mais les échecs successifs de Dracula Untold (2014) et La Momie (2017) ont contraint le studio à abandonner ce format. Kirkman a alors reproposé un film autonome, mêlant horreur et comédie. Dexter Fletcher, d’abord attaché à la réalisation en 2019, a cédé sa place à Chris McKay en avril 2021, ce dernier ayant convaincu Universal avec un pitch alliant humour et action. McKay, dont la filmographie inclut Lego Batman, le film et la série Robot Chicken, a revendiqué une filiation directe avec le Dracula de Tod Browning (1931). Le tournage s’est déroulé de février à août 2022 à La Nouvelle-Orléans, un cadre gothique et festif qui colle à l’esprit baroque du film. Un détail anecdotique : une vingtaine de véhicules de production furent cambriolés dès le début du tournage, le 8 février 2022.
Sorti aux États-Unis le 14 avril 2023 après une avant-première mondiale à l’Overlook Film Festival le 30 mars, Renfield a reçu un accueil critique mitigé. Sur Rotten Tomatoes, le film a obtenu des scores intermédiaires ; sur Metacritic, il s’est établi à 53/100 sur 49 critiques. Sur AlloCiné, la presse française lui a attribué 2,4/5. Certains critiques ont salué l’audace du concept et la performance flamboyante de Nicolas Cage en Dracula histrionique, à l’image d’Écran Large qui a trouvé le concept « si charmant et évident qu’il est presque étonnant qu’il n’ait jamais été mis en scène avant ». D’autres, comme L’Obs ou Le Figaro, ont déploré une ultraviolence tape-à-l’œil masquant un scénario creux. Commercialement, le film s’est révélé décevant, engrangeant 26,9 millions de dollars au box-office mondial pour un budget de 65 millions, et seulement 37 645 entrées en France. Le film n’a reçu aucune récompense notable en festival.
