Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Scott Pilgrim contre le monde au Québec) est une comédie d’action fantastique canado-américano-britannico-japonaise coécrite et réalisée par Edgar Wright, sortie en salles le 13 août 2010 aux États-Unis. Adapté de la série de comics Scott Pilgrim de Bryan Lee O’Malley, le film suit un jeune bassiste de Toronto contraint d’affronter les sept ex maléfiques de la femme dont il tombe amoureux, dans un style visuel directement inspiré de la culture du jeu vidéo rétro.
Scott Pilgrim, vingt-deux ans, bassiste dans le groupe de rock indépendant Sex Bob-omb à Toronto, sort avec Knives Chau, une lycéenne de dix-sept ans, au grand dam de ses amis et de sa colocation. Sa vie bascule lorsqu’il rencontre Ramona Flowers, une mystérieuse jeune femme aux cheveux roses employée comme livreuse. Pour espérer construire une relation avec elle, Scott doit affronter un à un les sept ex-petits amis maléfiques de Ramona, chacun doté de pouvoirs surnaturels et bien décidé à l’empêcher d’être heureuse avec quelqu’un d’autre. Le récit, sans en dévoiler l’issue, multiplie les affrontements chorégraphiés à la manière d’un jeu de combat, tout en explorant les thèmes de l’amour propre, du passé sentimental et du passage à l’âge adulte.
Le tournage a débuté en mars 2009 et s’est déroulé à Toronto, notamment aux Pinewood Toronto Studios, ainsi que sur des lieux emblématiques de la ville tels que le château Casa Loma. Edgar Wright, déjà connu pour Shaun of the Dead et Hot Fuzz, avait entretenu l’attente du public en publiant quotidiennement une photo du tournage sur son blog durant toute l’année 2009. Le film transpose l’univers de la bande dessinée par des effets visuels stylisés évoquant les pixels, les onomatopées et les bruitages 8-bits et 16-bits des jeux vidéo d’arcade. Le casting réunit notamment Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Brandon Routh et Ellen Wong, plusieurs choix de distribution ayant été validés avec l’accord de Bryan Lee O’Malley lui-même. La bande originale a été composée par Nigel Godrich, associée à des morceaux originaux écrits pour le groupe fictif Sex Bob-omb.
Salué par une large majorité de critiques pour son inventivité visuelle, son humour et son montage dynamique, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World a néanmoins connu un échec commercial à sa sortie, ne rapportant qu’environ 48 millions de dollars pour un budget estimé entre 60 et 85 millions. Ce déséquilibre entre accueil critique enthousiaste et résultats en salles a rapidement été interprété comme le signe d’un décalage entre le film et son public visé au moment de sa sortie. Depuis, le long métrage a acquis un statut de film culte, régulièrement cité dans des classements de fin de décennie, et son influence esthétique perdure dans la culture populaire geek. Ce succès différé a conduit Edgar Wright à réunir l’essentiel du casting original pour la série d’animation Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, diffusée sur Netflix en 2023.
