La psychiatre Elizabeth Derby, épanouie dans sa carrière et sa vie conjugale, voit son équilibre basculer lorsqu’un jeune patient perturbé, Asa, se présente à son cabinet en se décrivant comme la proie d’une entité qui cherche à lui voler son corps. Sceptique, Elizabeth se laisse pourtant peu à peu fasciner, jusqu’à ce qu’elle comprenne qu’Asa est effectivement habité par Ephraïm Waite, un ancien sorcier capable de transférer sa conscience d’un corps à l’autre grâce à une formule ancienne prononcée par téléphone. Le processus de possession l’envahit à son tour, la privant progressivement de son identité et précipitant dans son sillage une série de morts violentes. Enfermée dans un établissement psychiatrique, elle tente de convaincre son amie et collègue Daniella Upton de la réalité de ce qu’elle a vécu, pendant qu’Ephraïm continue d’étendre son emprise sur les corps qui l’entourent.
Le scénariste Dennis Paoli, collaborateur historique de Stuart Gordon sur Re-Animator et From Beyond, travaillait sur une adaptation de « The Thing on the Doorstep » depuis de nombreuses années. C’est Barbara Crampton qui, à l’occasion de commémorations rendant hommage à Gordon, décédé en 2020, prit contact avec Paoli et proposa de concrétiser le projet. Joe Lynch rejoignit l’équipe en tant que réalisateur avec l’intention de féminiser le rôle principal — dans la nouvelle originale, le protagoniste est un homme — pour en explorer les dimensions psychosexuelles sous un angle nouveau. Lynch souhaitait que le film ressemble à un thriller érotique de la fin des années 1980 et du début des années 1990, cohérent avec l’esthétique que le personnage principal aurait elle-même trouvée séduisante. Le tournage débuta en mai 2022 à Jackson, Mississippi. Barbara Crampton assura également la production sous sa bannière Alliance Media Partners, aux côtés du producteur Brian Yuzna, autre figure tutélaire du cinéma fantastique de cette époque.
Suitable Flesh fit sa première mondiale au festival Tribeca le 11 juin 2023, dans la section Escape from Tribeca, avant d’être présenté au Fantastic Fest en septembre de la même année. Les droits de distribution mondiale furent acquis par RLJE Films et Shudder quelques jours avant la première. Sur Rotten Tomatoes, le film obtient 85 % de critiques favorables sur la base de 74 avis, avec un consensus soulignant son ton camp et ses performances habitées. Sur Metacritic, il récolte un score de 64 sur 100. Les critiques ont salué en particulier les prestations de Heather Graham et de Barbara Crampton, ainsi que la fidélité affectueuse de l’ensemble à l’esprit des films de Gordon, tout en pointant des inégalités de ton et un budget contraint visible à l’écran. Le film s’impose comme un hommage sincère à une frange de l’horreur de genre que peu de productions contemporaines osent revendiquer aussi frontalement.
