Le scénario, coécrit par Christopher et Jonathan Nolan à partir d’une histoire originale coécrite avec David S. Goyer, s’appuie en partie sur le roman graphique Knightfall pour la figure de Bane, tout en développant une réflexion sur les tensions sociales et le populisme, sans que Nolan ne revendique d’intention politique explicite. Le tournage se déroule notamment à Pittsburgh, transformée en doublure principale de Gotham City, ainsi qu’à New York, Londres et en Inde, pour un budget de production estimé entre 230 et 250 millions de dollars. La photographie est signée Wally Pfister, le montage confié à Lee Smith et la musique composée par Hans Zimmer.
