The Gentlemen (Guy Ritchie - 2019)
The Gentlemen (Guy Ritchie - 2019)

The Gentlemen is an action-comedy crime film directed, written and produced by Guy Ritchie, released in 2020. Fronted by an ensemble cast including Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Michelle Dockery, Henry Golding, Jeremy Strong and Eddie Marsan, the film marks Ritchie’s return to the genre that made his name with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. The plot follows an American marijuana kingpin based in London who is looking to sell off his empire, and the spiral of blackmail and scheming this sets in motion. The film blends dark humor, a fragmented narrative structure and a gallery of colorful characters, hallmarks of Ritchie’s signature style.

Mickey Pearson, an American expat who has built one of the UK’s most powerful cannabis empires in London, is planning to sell it to a Texan billionaire dynasty and quietly retire from the business. Word of the deal quickly draws unwanted attention: a private investigator and former journalist turned screenwriter, Fletcher, attempts to cash in on compromising information he has gathered on Mickey by pitching it as a film script to Raymond, Pearson’s right-hand man. Meanwhile, a rival Chinese gangster nicknamed Dry Eye and a boxing coach known simply as Coach each try to exploit the situation, while the tabloid press gets involved too. Told largely in flashback through Fletcher’s narration, the story piles on twists, betrayals and shifting alliances across an underground London where aristocratic gangsters and newcomers clash for control of the market.

Announced in 2018 under the working title Toff Guys, the project was confirmed at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where Miramax acquired international distribution rights. Filming began in late 2018 in London, with Guy Ritchie returning to the style and tone of his earlier hits after a detour into Disney territory with Aladdin. The film briefly changed its title to Bush in early 2019 before settling on The Gentlemen. STX Entertainment (later STXfilms) came aboard to handle US distribution, while Miramax covered the rest of the world through Toff Guy Films, a dedicated production company. The screenplay was co-written by Ritchie with longtime collaborators Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. The film premiered at London’s Curzon Mayfair on December 3, 2019, ahead of theatrical releases in the UK on January 1, 2020, in the US on January 24, and in France on February 5, 2020.

Critically well received, The Gentlemen was widely described as a return to form for Guy Ritchie, praised for its pacing, humor and cast performances, particularly Hugh Grant and Colin Farrell in against-type roles. Some critics, however, flagged troubling undertones in the treatment of certain characters. On AlloCiné, the film holds a press rating of 3.5/5 and an audience rating of 4.1/5. Commercially, it proved a success, grossing around $115 million worldwide against a $22 million budget. That success led to a television adaptation released on Netflix starting in 2024, starring Theo James in the lead role, extending the film’s world into the television landscape.
