Distribué exclusivement par Apple Original Films, le film réunit Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy et Sigourney Weaver dans un récit hybride qui brasse espionnage, romance, horreur de créatures et fantastique post-apocalyptique. Il constitue selon Apple le plus grand lancement de film dans l’histoire de la plateforme.
Levi Kane, ancien sniper des Marines reconverti en contractuel privé, et Drasa, operative lituanienne au service du Kremlin, reçoivent chacun une mission identique mais isolée : surveiller respectivement le bord ouest et le bord est d’un immense et mystérieux précipice, sans aucun contact avec l’extérieur ni avec leur homologue de l’autre côté, pendant un an. Sous les ordres de Bartholomew — officielle responsable de l’opération interprétée par Sigourney Weaver —, ils doivent simplement tenir leur poste et empêcher quoi que ce soit de sortir du gouffre. Mais séparés par des centaines de mètres de vide, les deux guetteurs finissent par communiquer à distance, d’abord par signaux, puis par correspondances, tissant progressivement un lien amoureux. Lorsqu’une créature remonte des profondeurs et que la nature apocalyptique de la menace leur est révélée, ils doivent descendre ensemble dans les entrailles du précipice pour l’affronter.
Le scénario est écrit par Zach Dean comme spec script — sans commande préalable d’un studio — et inscrit en 2020 sur la Black List hollywoodienne des scénarios non produits les plus appréciés de l’industrie. Scott Derrickson — connu pour Sinister, Doctor Strange et The Black Phone — s’engage à la réalisation en mars 2022 via sa société Crooked Highway. Miles Teller rejoint le projet en août de la même année et en devient coproducteur exécutif. Anya Taylor-Joy est confirmée en octobre 2022, en même temps qu’Apple Original Films acquiert les droits de distribution. Sigourney Weaver complète le casting en mars 2023. Le tournage commence en mars 2023 à Londres et se poursuit aux studios Warner Bros. de Leavesden ainsi qu’au Pays de Galles. La photographie est assurée par Dan Laustsen, directeur de la photographie attitré de Guillermo del Toro, et la musique composée par Trent Reznor et Atticus Ross. Le montage est signé Frédéric Thoraval.
La réception critique est mitigée. Rotten Tomatoes enregistre environ 62 % d’avis favorables pour les critiques professionnels, contre 74 % du côté du public — un écart révélateur. Metacritic lui accorde 57/100. La presse salue quasi unanimement la chimie entre les deux acteurs principaux, la photographie de Laustsen, les décors et certaines séquences d’horreur, tout en reprochant un second acte d’action routinier et une résolution prévisible. RogerEbert.com parle d’un « film de drive-in » assumé et plaisant à regarder depuis son canapé. Certains critiques signalent la distance entre le score de Reznor et Ross — moins mémorable que celui de Challengers, sorti peu avant — et les attentes suscitées par leur réputation. Le film reste néanmoins un événement commercial significatif pour Apple TV+.

Under the orders of Bartholomew — the official overseer of the operation, played by Sigourney Weaver — they must simply hold their post and prevent anything from emerging from the depths. But separated by hundreds of meters of void, the two sentinels gradually begin communicating at a distance, first through signals, then through exchanges, slowly building a romantic bond. When a creature ascends from the depths and the apocalyptic nature of the threat is revealed to them, they must descend together into the gorge’s depths to confront it.
The screenplay was written by Zach Dean as a spec script — without a prior studio commission — and placed on the 2020 Hollywood Black List of the most-liked unproduced screenplays in the industry. Scott Derrickson — known for Sinister, Doctor Strange, and The Black Phone — signed on to direct in March 2022 through his production company Crooked Highway. Miles Teller joined the project in August of that year and became an executive producer. Anya Taylor-Joy was confirmed in October 2022, at the same time Apple Original Films acquired distribution rights. Sigourney Weaver completed the cast in March 2023. Filming began in March 2023 in London and continued at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and in Wales. Cinematography was handled by Dan Laustsen, Guillermo del Toro’s regular director of photography, and the score composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Editing was by Frédéric Thoraval.
Critical reception was mixed. Rotten Tomatoes recorded approximately 62% favorable reviews from professional critics against 74% audience approval — a telling gap. Metacritic gave it 57 out of 100. Press nearly unanimously praised the chemistry between the two leads, Laustsen’s cinematography, the production design, and certain horror sequences, while faulting a formulaic action second half and predictable resolution. RogerEbert.com called it an « assumed drive-in movie, » enjoyable from the couch. Some critics noted the distance between Reznor and Ross’s score — less memorable than their work on Challengers, released shortly before — and the expectations their reputation generated. The film nonetheless remains a significant commercial event for Apple TV+.
