Elle y retrouve trois personnes perdues comme elle : Madeline, une femme plus âgée qui semble avoir établi des règles de survie, ainsi que Ciara et Daniel. Madeline lui explique la règle fondamentale du lieu : chaque nuit, les occupants doivent se tenir face à un grand miroir sans fenêtre, s’exposant au regard d’êtres mystérieux et hostiles qui les observent depuis la forêt — les « Guetteurs ». Quiconque sort la nuit ou s’écarte des règles disparaît. Mina commence à comprendre que ces créatures nocturnes ont des origines liées à la mythologie irlandaise, et que la situation du groupe est bien plus complexe qu’une simple survie.
En février 2023, New Line Cinema annonce le projet et confie à Ishana Night Shyamalan, alors âgée de vingt-trois ans et déjà connue pour avoir réalisé plusieurs épisodes de la série Servant de son père, ses débuts au long-métrage. La réalisatrice signe elle-même l’adaptation du roman de Shine, en conservant une grande fidélité à l’univers de l’œuvre. M. Night Shyamalan finance le film de sa propre poche, avant de le vendre à Warner Bros. pour 30 millions de dollars. Le tournage se déroule de juillet à septembre 2023 dans les paysages irlandais de Dublin, du Wicklow et du Galway — la forêt étant conçue comme un personnage à part entière. En juillet 2023, en plein milieu du tournage, la production obtient un accord provisoire pour continuer malgré la grève SAG-AFTRA, alors en cours.
