We Are Zombies est une comédie d’horreur canado-française écrite et réalisée par le collectif RKSS, composé d’Anouk Whissell, François Simard et Yoann-Karl Whissell, connus notamment pour Turbo Kid et Summer of ’84. Présenté en première mondiale à la soirée de clôture du festival Fantasia en août 2023, le film est sorti en salles au Québec le 17 juillet 2024, puis en France le 31 juillet suivant. Adapté de la bande dessinée française Les Zombies qui ont mangé le monde, le film se déroule dans une ville où cohabitent humains et « mal-vivants », des zombies non cannibales considérés comme des citoyens de seconde zone. Porté par Alexandre Nachi, Derek Johns et Megan Peta Hill, le film mêle comédie déjantée, effets gore et satire sociale.
Dans une ville où les zombies, appelés « mal-vivants », coexistent pacifiquement avec les humains sans représenter de danger direct, Karl et son demi-frère Freddy, deux fainéants en quête d’argent facile, se lancent avec leur amie Maggie dans un trafic consistant à récupérer illégalement des zombies pour le compte de particuliers. Leur combine tourne mal lorsqu’ils se retrouvent malgré eux mêlés aux agissements d’une mégacorporation aux intentions bien plus sombres que prévu, la Coleman Corporation, spécialisée dans la gestion officielle des mal-vivants. Lorsque la grand-mère de Karl et Maggie est enlevée dans le cadre de cette affaire, le trio doit s’improviser justicier malgré lui, affrontant tour à tour petits truands locaux et responsables de la corporation, pour tenter de la sauver avant qu’il ne soit trop tard.
Le scénario du film adapte la série de bande dessinée en quatre tomes Les Zombies qui ont mangé le monde, écrite par Jerry Frissen et illustrée par Guy Davis, publiée aux éditions Les Humanoïdes Associés entre 2004 et 2008. Le projet d’adaptation remonte à 2014, lorsque le producteur Laurent Baudens contacte le trio RKSS alors en pleine post-production de Turbo Kid en Nouvelle-Zélande pour leur proposer de porter la bande dessinée à l’écran. Le tournage s’est déroulé à Montréal et dans ses environs, du 29 mars au 5 mai 2022, dans le cadre d’une coproduction franco-québécoise réunissant notamment les sociétés Humanoids Inc. et Maneki Films. Le film a nécessité un important travail de maquillage et d’effets pratiques pour la conception visuelle des mal-vivants, une dimension du projet particulièrement soignée par l’équipe de production.
We Are Zombies a reçu un accueil critique globalement positif quoique partagé selon les publications, salué pour son ton décalé, ses effets gore pratiques réussis et sa bande-son synthétique, tandis que certains critiques ont pointé un humour parfois trop puéril et un scénario perçu comme convenu. Le film est sorti en streaming aux États-Unis sur la plateforme Screambox le 13 août 2024. Il confirme la patte reconnaissable du collectif RKSS pour un cinéma de genre nostalgique et généreux en références, à la suite de leurs précédents films Turbo Kid, Summer of ’84 et Wake Up.

The screenplay adapts the four-volume graphic novel series The Zombies Who Ate the World, written by Jerry Frissen and illustrated by Guy Davis, published by Les Humanoïdes Associés between 2004 and 2008. The adaptation project dates back to 2014, when producer Laurent Baudens reached out to the RKSS trio, then finishing post-production on Turbo Kid in New Zealand, to propose bringing the comic to the screen.
