Reine rouge est un roman policier de l’écrivain espagnol Juan Gómez-Jurado, publié en Espagne sous le titre original Reina Roja le 8 novembre 2018 aux éditions Ediciones B, puis traduit en français par Judith Vernant et publié chez Fleuve éditions le 6 janvier 2022. Premier volume de la trilogie consacrée à Antonia Scott, il installe l’un des duos d’enquêteurs les plus lus du thriller espagnol contemporain. Le roman noue son intrigue autour d’un tueur qui s’en prend aux héritiers des plus grandes fortunes d’Espagne, dans un Madrid contemporain.
Antonia Scott n’est ni policière ni criminologue : elle n’a jamais porté d’arme ni d’insigne, mais son intelligence hors norme lui a permis, par le passé, de résoudre des dizaines d’affaires criminelles pour le compte d’une structure occulte liée à Europol. L’inspecteur Jon Gutiérrez, policier suspendu de ses fonctions après une accusation de corruption, se voit proposer une mission par un mystérieux commanditaire surnommé Mentor : convaincre Antonia de sortir de sa retraite pour l’aider à élucider un dernier dossier. Un tueur s’en prend aux héritiers des plus grandes fortunes espagnoles, sans mobile apparent lié à l’argent ni au plaisir de tuer, déroutant les services de police madrilènes. Jon et Antonia, que tout oppose, doivent apprendre à travailler ensemble tandis que l’enquête les entraîne à travers Madrid, sur les traces d’un assassin dont la logique échappe à toute grille de lecture habituelle.
Reine rouge marque, en 2018, un tournant dans la carrière de Juan Gómez-Jurado, journaliste de formation déjà auteur de plusieurs thrillers à succès comme La Leyenda del ladrón, El emblema del traidor ou Cicatriz. Avec ce roman, l’auteur madrilène invente le personnage d’Antonia Scott et pose les bases d’un projet narratif plus vaste, l’Universo Reina Roja, qui se déploiera ensuite à travers Loba Negra et Rey Blanco, puis d’autres romans liés à cet univers. Le livre est structuré en trois parties intitulées Jon, Carla et Antonia, regroupant 68 chapitres courts, un épilogue et une note de l’auteur, un choix de construction qui accélère le rythme de lecture.
