Spin-off de la série Titans, Doom Patrol réunit Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl et Crazy Jane, quatre individus défigurés ou marqués par des accidents leur ayant conféré des capacités hors normes. Recueillis par le docteur Niles Caulder, un scientifique aux méthodes peu orthodoxes, ils apprennent à vivre avec leur condition tout en la mettant au service d’enquêtes sur des phénomènes étranges. Lorsque leur mentor disparaît mystérieusement, le groupe est contacté par Cyborg, qui les entraîne dans une mission qu’ils ne peuvent refuser. À la fois groupe de soutien et équipe de super-héros malgré eux, la Doom Patrol se bat pour un monde qui préférerait les ignorer, entre quête d’identité et affrontements avec des ennemis toujours plus déroutants.
Le projet naît en 2018 lorsque Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter et Geoff Johns sollicitent Jeremy Carver pour développer une série Doom Patrol en prises de vues réelles destinée au service de streaming DC Universe, après une introduction des personnages dans un épisode de Titans. Initialement commandée pour treize épisodes, la première saison en comptera finalement quinze, diffusés du 15 février au 24 mai 2019. Brendan Fraser, Matt Bomer et April Bowlby reprennent leurs rôles de Titans, la série se déroulant toutefois dans une continuité distincte, confirmée par le crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths. La deuxième saison, réduite à neuf épisodes en raison de la pandémie, est diffusée simultanément sur DC Universe et HBO Max, qui devient l’unique diffuseur à partir de la troisième saison.
Dès sa première saison, Doom Patrol reçoit un accueil critique très favorable, avec un score avoisinant les 92 à 94 % sur Rotten Tomatoes, la presse saluant une distribution engagée et une écriture assumant pleinement l’étrangeté du matériau d’origine. La série est régulièrement comparée favorablement aux autres adaptations de super-héros de son époque, certains critiques la jugeant plus originale et plus mordante que ses concurrentes. Renouvelée saison après saison malgré l’incertitude liée à l’arrêt de DC Universe comme plateforme de séries originales, elle est finalement annoncée conclue avec sa quatrième saison en janvier 2023. Diffusée en deux parties entre décembre 2022 et octobre 2023, cette ultime saison clôt un ensemble de 46 épisodes répartis sur quatre saisons, la série s’achevant le 9 novembre 2023 sur une fin saluée par la production comme à la hauteur de son parcours atypique.
