Le projet naît en 2012 sous le titre Our Name Is Adam, développé par T. S. Nowlin pour Paramount Pictures avec Tom Cruise envisagé dans le rôle principal. Il reste en développement durant près d’une décennie avant que Netflix n’acquière les droits de distribution en juillet 2020. Quatre mois seulement après cette acquisition, Shawn Levy et Ryan Reynolds — introduits l’un à l’autre par Hugh Jackman — lancent le tournage à Vancouver en novembre 2020 ; il s’achève en mars 2021.
