Assassination Nation is a 2018 American satirical black comedy horror thriller film written and directed by Sam Levinson, starring Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, and Abra in the lead roles. The story takes place in the fictional town of Salem, which spirals into chaos after an anonymous computer hacker begins leaking the personal secrets of many of its residents. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2018, and released theatrically in the United States on September 21, Assassination Nation received a mixed critical reception and was a commercial failure on a $7 million budget.
Lily and her three best friends, Bex, Sarah, and Em, live lives shaped by texting, social media, and selfies in the small American town of Salem. Their everyday life is upended when an anonymous hacker starts exposing the private messages and secrets of thousands of residents, first bringing down the mayor and then the high school principal. When the hacking is traced back to the IP address of Lily’s home, she becomes the target of a growing mob mentality fueled by the anger of men in the town who feel exposed and humiliated by the leaks. The situation escalates until the four teenagers, targeted by an armed mob, are forced to defend themselves by any means necessary to survive a night of widespread violence.
Assassination Nation was developed starting in October 2016 as the first film from independent label Foxtail Entertainment, founded by Matthew Malek and Anita Gou, with David S. Goyer and Kevin Turen producing alongside Bron Studios and Phantom Four Films. Filming took place in New Orleans starting in March 2017, including a notable home-invasion sequence shot in a single continuous crane take. Sam Levinson has said he wrote the screenplay amid a climate of political anxiety, just days before the birth of his first child, seeking to channel the rage and « madness of the internet » he perceived in American public discourse. The score, composed by Ian Hultquist, blends sonic experimentation inspired by Marco Beltrami’s Scream and Cliff Martinez with pop tracks from artists such as Lana Del Rey, Kanye West, and BTS. Following its Sundance premiere, distribution rights were acquired by Neon, later joined by 30West and Refinery29.
Met with a mixed critical reception, Assassination Nation was praised for its visual energy and female-led cast but criticized for an uneven shift between social satire and exploitative violence in its final act. Commercially, Assassination Nation was a failure, grossing just $2.9 million worldwide against a $7 million budget and opening at 15th place at the US box office. Neon chief Tom Quinn acknowledged the film’s poor box-office performance while defending it as a « bold » and « cathartic » response to the social climate of 2018. The film is now discussed more for its commentary on online harassment, feminism, and toxic masculinity than for its theatrical run.
