Très vite, une voix se fait entendre dans l’habitacle : William, propriétaire du véhicule, riche et sadique justicier autoproclamé, l’a délibérément attiré dans ce piège high-tech. Via le système informatique du véhicule, William contrôle à distance lumières, température, musique et mécanismes divers, transformant l’habitacle en instrument de torture psychologique et physique. Ce qui commence comme une confrontation entre un voleur et sa victime évolue rapidement en un duel philosophique acéré sur la justice, la responsabilité individuelle et les inégalités sociales — le tout dans l’espace confiné de 4,5 mètres de carrosserie.
Le projet naît sous l’impulsion de la ZQ Entertainment, associée à la Raimi Productions de Sam Raimi, qui retrouve ainsi David Yarovesky après leur collaboration sur Nightbooks (2021). Glen Powell était initialement pressenti pour le rôle principal, mais des contraintes d’agenda le conduisent à se désister, ouvrant la voie à Bill Skarsgård. Anthony Hopkins, lui, est resté attaché au projet tout au long du développement. Le tournage se déroule à Vancouver entre novembre et décembre 2023. Pour filmer l’essentiel de l’action à l’intérieur de l’habitacle, des optiques spécifiques ont été conçues sur mesure, permettant à la caméra de travailler dans cet espace extrêmement contraint. Le directeur de la photographie Michael Dallatorre adopte une grammaire visuelle dynamique — angles déformés, mouvements épousant l’anxiété croissante du personnage — pour éviter l’écueil de la monotonie visuelle inhérente au cadre unique. Yarovesky présente le film comme un conte moral plutôt qu’un film à thèse politique, souhaitant laisser les deux personnages s’affronter à armes égales sans imposer de verdict.
À sa sortie, Locked reçoit un accueil critique mitigé. Sur Rotten Tomatoes, il obtient 63 % d’avis favorables sur la base de 81 critiques, avec une note moyenne de 5,9/10. Sur Metacritic, le score s’établit à 45/100. La presse spécialisée salue la maîtrise technique de Yarovesky dans la gestion du cadre unique, la performance physique de Skarsgård et la présence vocale saisissante d’Hopkins, dont la voix seule suffit à instiller une menace crédible. Mais plusieurs critiques reprochent au film de diluer la charge critique sociale de l’original argentin au profit d’un spectacle plus conventionnel, et de ne pas trancher dans le débat moral qu’il prétend ouvrir. The project was developed by ZQ Entertainment in partnership with Sam Raimi's Raimi Productions, reuniting Raimi with Yarovesky after their collaboration on Nightbooks (2021). On Metacritic, the film holds a score of 45 out of 100. Specialist press praised Yarovesky's technical command of the single-location format, Skarsgård's almost entirely physical performance, and Hopkins' commanding vocal presence, which generates genuine menace without ever needing to share the frame with his co-star. However, several critics argued that the film dilutes the sharp social critique of the Argentine original in favor of more conventional genre entertainment, and fails to commit to either side of the moral debate it raises.
