Lors d’un monologue ininterrompu livré à une jeune collègue, Margaret révèle enfin, par bribes glaçantes, la nature de la relation toxique qu’elle a entretenue avec David vingt ans plus tôt, et la manière dont celle-ci continue de la hanter. Convaincue que David représente une menace réelle pour Abbie, Margaret va alors être entraînée dans une confrontation de plus en plus radicale, où la frontière entre réalité et délire devient incertaine.
Resurrection est le second long métrage d’Andrew Semans, après Nancy, Please (2012), un drame psychologique déjà construit autour d’une obsession malsaine entre deux anciens colocataires. Le scénario de Resurrection figure sur la Black List 2019, qui recense les meilleurs scénarios non encore produits à Hollywood, et c’est sa lecture qui convainc le producteur Alex Scharfman de porter le projet à l’écran. Le tournage a lieu au cours de l’été 2021 en extérieurs, principalement à Albany, dans l’État de New York, ainsi qu’à Williamsburg, dans le quartier de Brooklyn. Rebecca Hall et Tim Roth sont annoncés au casting peu après le début de la production. Le film s’articule notamment autour d’un monologue de sept minutes livré en un seul plan continu par Rebecca Hall, que l’actrice aurait interprété dès la première prise. En France, le film connaît une diffusion confidentielle : présenté en compétition au Festival Européen du Film Fantastique de Strasbourg en 2022, il bénéficie d’une sortie en salles très limitée le 23 septembre 2022, avant d’être rendu disponible en vidéo à la demande le 20 novembre 2022 ; Allociné y recense une note spectateurs de 2,1/5, sensiblement plus sévère que l’accueil critique anglophone. Resurrection demeure ainsi un film davantage remarqué par la critique spécialisée et les amateurs de cinéma de genre que par le grand public, en particulier pour son traitement radical des thèmes de l’emprise psychologique et du traumatisme maternel, et pour son dénouement délibérément ambigu et dérangeant.
